Dislocation occurs when the ball is forced out of the socket, most of the time due to trauma while the arm is extended above the shoulder. The area may swell, bruise, look deformed and hurt very badly, you will likely be unable to move the joint. Unfortunately, once you have dislocated your shoulder for the first time, it is more likely to happen again. This is why some people simply pop them back into place on their own, because they have become accustomed to the issue.
